China, Taiwan, and Singapore, yes, but Indonesia, really? And there aren't too many of them anyway, are there?

Maybe he means Malayasia? There are many Chinese in Malayasia.

Well, there are lots of Indonesians of Chinese origin, too, but I didn't know there were any on UniLang.

I know but Malayasia's population of ethnic Chinese is like 24 percent compared to Indonesia's 1 percent. It'd be far more likely to meet someone from Malayasia who speaks Chinese than Indonesia. (I wasn't saying Indonesia doesn't have Chinese speakers) but there are more Chinese in Malayasia than Indonesia.

Oh OK, fair enough. :D But of course we won't know what Youngfun meant until he comes here and enlightens us.

I was going on memory and said things without checking. For some reason, I thought Kirinputra and laoshu were Indonesians...

And also, some Unilangers studied Cantonese without learning Mandarin first.

Did they really, or did they just say they were thinking of doing that?

Tenebrarum and garethw87. Because Cantonese is the dominant language in British and in Vietnamese Chinatowns. I don't know what's their level though.

Is Cantonese the dominant language of most Chinatowns in North America and Europe? I'm pretty sure it's the dominant language of all the Chinese neighbourhoods here in Toronto. (We have 2 official Chinatowns I think, but really there's like 3 or possibly 4 large areas in the GTA that are predominantly Chinese-dominated).

Not unlikely. Cantonese people are the best represented outside of China in general, FWIR. The "Chinatown" here in Austin is really more like Little Saigon, and I think most of the speakers of Chinese languages here (including both Mandarin and Cantonese!) are from Taiwan. And apparently in parts of Europe where there aren't huge Chinese populations, most of the Chinese people are from southern Zhejiang, just like Youngfun's family. Or at least I think I remember hearing him say something like that once.

From my understanding...

North and South America - Cantonese & Taiwan
(though there are many Southern Zhejiang in New York and in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro; and the Fujian are the majority in New York)

Europe:
UK - Cantonese (esp. Hong Kong)
Germany and Netherlands - half Cantonese half Southern Zhejiang
France - half Southern Zhejiang half Teochew
Italy - Southern Zhejiang rulez, some Fujian in Tuscany, some North-east Chinese in Rome
Spain - Southern Zhejiang (mostly Qingtian) rulez
Rest of Europe - mostly Southern Zhejiang

Asia:
Vietnam - Cantonese, Hakka, Teochew
Thailand - mostly Teochew
Malaysia - Cantonese in Central Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Hokkien in North and South
Singapore - Hokkien, Cantonese, Teochew, Hakka, Hainanese
Rest of Southeast Asia: mostly Cantonese, Hokkien, Teochew and Hakka.

Australia - half Cantonese half rest of China

The pattern is that Cantonese people either go to South East Asia or to Anglo countries, or to famous/highly developed countries, while Southern Zhejiang go to less popular destinations, usually less developed countries in Europe.

Thanks, Youngfun!

Meanwhile, a minor update: I have only two languages left on my list. (I'm not going to bother copying out my whole list again and crossing out Quechua and Mapudungun, because I'm pretty much just dragging out Lnuismk and Michif out to the end of the year anyway and don't need a reminder :P).

Hey, everybody! It's almost Christmas, and I think I'm done doing all the languages on my list already! :partyhat: Although I'm still open to responding to anything that happens in the North American Indigenous Languages forum for now. :P (And I know, there's an obvious joke to make here, but oh well ).

Merry Christmas! (to those who celebrate it, heheh)

Omg, if anybody remembers that I said earlier on this thread that FluentU is not completely for free...I only watched like two videos in French, and now one of those two is no longer available for free. :x

Yeah, I tried FluentU out too, and was quite taken back by the lack of free content. But to take what was free and not have it available freely anymore? Bullshit!

2015 begins in just four days! So I'll open a new TAC thread when (or after) that happens. :P After that, I will probably stop posting in the Native American Indigenous Languages forum and (probably) get back into posting at least one Malayalam lesson (plus songs ).

I'm pleased with how this TAC turned out, even though I only started it more than halfway into the year. Not only did I manage to circulate through all of my languages (and add new ones!) and learn lots of stuff, but also I tried out some new resources and came up with some ideas about what to do to improve my skills in the languages I'm not basically learning from scratch. And of course, seeing, you know, "spam" on my TAC threads made it that much more fun. :D So thanks to everybody for spamming!

Oh, sorry, I don't mean stop posting altogether! I mean stop my current trend of just posting there, going back to Malayalam (and Thai and Hindi and Mandarin Chinese and yadda yadda yadda) and then coming back to the NAILs forum. :P

I can understand if that's disappointing, too, but...well, not all the languages I'm doing are NAILs. ;)

So now Yoda speaks English, French, Hebrew, and languages indigenous to the Americas?
