Yep (only in that context though!) :) If you add 日 to it, it reads 明日 (あした) or Tomorrow.

Is 明 read as あ in that verb as well, giving あける?

AFAICT, it means both 'begin' and 'end', but not 'break'. There are many words for 'break' in Japanese, but this doesn't seem to be one of them.
