TAC 2015 Meera (Hindi, Arabic, Japanese, French)

Postby Meera » 2015-01-04, 21:49

I'm making a new topic for 2015 because my other TAC got pretty long. For right now I am only adding Hindi, Arabic and French because these are the three I know I am definitely doing. I might add Bengali and Japanese updates too occasionally and other languages too. However I am doing Arabic and French in school, so I need to add these languages. I might swap French out though I'm not sure yet.

My resources:

Hindi
Teach Yourself Hindi-Finished
Elementary Hindi-Finished
Colloquial Hindi-Finished.
Intermediate Hindi- Just ordered this and waiting for it to come in.
Hindi Grammar Routledge
Hindi Reader Routledge
I want to try to get better at Urdu too so I will be using my Teach Yourself Urdu which I really need to finish, I'm using my Urdu grammar also and I might order some more Urdu books.
Goals- I want to be able to read and write Urdu better, I want to level up in Hindi and learn a new vocab word each day. I'm going to try to do some writing in Hindi each day, maybe like a daily journal. I put my Ipod in Hindi :)

Arabic
Using Alkitaab for school
Living Arabic
Arabic Voices
Easy Arabic Reader
Short Arabic Stories
My goals for Arabic is get at least a ninety in my Arabic class and get to an actual intermediate level. That feels impossible though. I also need to watch more things in Arabic. My tv viewing is basically 50 percent English and 50 percent Hindi/Urdu. I really need to include more Arabic and listen to Arabic more. I'm going to try to listen at least an hour a day.

French
Contacts
TY French
Duolingo-Finished
Painless French
French in Action
watch more movies and france 24 in French lol

Japanese
Genki
Genki Workbook
Living Language Japanese
Watch anime

I'm also using Memrise for all of them. I need to find a good bookstore for Hindi and Arabic. I'm going to spend a couple of days collecting more resources and setting up a study space and try to go to the library each day. I need to get back into my languages because 2014 was an awful year for me in general and my languages besides the ones I did in school took a huge downfall. So I'm hoping 2015 will be better :D

Minus Japanese, we're doing the same set of languages! Good luck, to both of us! ;)

Day 1:

(hi) My new Hindi book should arrive tomorrow! In the meantime I am reading बड़े घर की बेटी. I also did twenty minutes of this course on memrise:
http://www.memrise.com/course/255892/10 ... no-typing/

(ar) Did some work for MSA today and started the mango languages Levantine course. I started the Arab voices book today which is like a reader. It has both MSA and dialects from each region. Some of the dialects featured are Egyptian, Iraqi, Tunisian and Jordanian. I thought the Tunisian dialect was beautiful! The first lesson is about Razane, a Syrian woman studying in the USA. The article was in MSA. The Vocab from her article was:
والعكس أيضا
ما يزال
أتاني أن
ومن ثم
أنوي أن أدرس
بشكل جيد
قبل أن أبلغ الثلاثين من العمر
في البلدية

(fr) Started this course on memrise:
http://www.memrise.com/course/121144/no ... te-french/
Translated some articles on duolingo and reviewed some skills.

Although it's not limited to french, you reminded me: when I was working in France, it was painfully obvious that I only knew "academic" French. Try reading some manga aimed at teens or pre teens, it's easy, you learn slang and sound less stuffy.

Haven't had much time to do much. My intersession class is killing me! I had to do four essays for this danm class all due by Tuesday I am getting now sleep. Anyway I did finally figure out how the google input method works so now I don't have to slowly search for letters when typing in Hindi, Urdu or Arabic!

(hi)Finished first chapter in my Intermediate Hindi. Did some memrise lessons. Haven't been able to watch any Hindi movies or tv shows because my TV broke, I have been listening to news online however.

(ar) Elementary Arabic 2 Class starts on Tuesday. I have been reviewing the first chapter, wrote down the voculary and I have been listening the videos that come with the site. Trying to get a head start anyway.

(ja) Finished first two chapter of Living Language. Watched five episodes of Norgami.

(fr) Ugh nothing except watched the walking dead with French subs.

You've been a busy beaver, huh?!

You're making me want to do some actual study in Japanese! But for now I've relegated Japanese to a tier 2 language - languages that I'm semi-actively learning. (Actually I organized all my languages into 5 tiers: actively learning, semi-actively learning, passively learning, no longer learning (for now) but still remember at least a word in, want to learn.)

You should study some Japanese  . It's so much fun! Right now it's also not a serious language for me but the more I study it the more I like it. For example today I said I can only do twenty minutes of Japanese and I ended up doing two hours. Two years ago I honestly never thought in a million years I'd ever be learning Japanese. Five years ago I wouldnt have even bought a book on Japanese. I've seriously fallen in love with it. Resources for Japanese are pretty good too. Don't know how much I can keep up with it this semester but I'm going to at least try to finish Living Language and Genki.
