Shaoileam gum biodh e na dheagh smuain beagan ath-bheothachaidh a thoirt air an fhòram a tha seo le bhith a' cur air bhonn snàth ciùil anns am faod sibh innse dhan a chèile cò an ceòl as fheàrr leibh ann an saoghal nan cànan ceilteach!

I thought it'd be a good idea to get a bit o' life back into this forum by starting up a music thread where you can tell us all about your favourite music in the Celtic world.

Níl droch-smaoineamh ar chor ar bith agat ansin. Mise, is maith go mór liom chuile rud a bhaint leis na piobaí uillin. Ní hiad Tiarnan Ó Duinnchinn, Dicky Deegan agus Éamon Díolún (Eamon Dillon) ach cúpla ainm atá ag teacht i m'intinn. Is breá liom freisin na hamhráin atá ag Alan Stivell, tá sé iontach ar fad.

That's not a bad idea at all. Me, I really like everything to do with the Uilleann pipes. Tiarnan Ó Duinnchinn, Dicky Deegan and Éamon Díolún (Eamon Dillon) are just a few names that come to mind. I love the songs of Alan Stivell as well, he's amazing.

Agus cad é an fhadhb leis na chaoraigh is na prátaí? :hmm: He, ach i ndáiríre, is iontach an rud é ná go bhfuil níos mó ná ceol thradaisiúnta ar fáil as Gàidhlig (is as Gaeilge freisin).

Chan e idir gu bheil dad sam bith ceàrr air òrain san toirear iomradh air caoraich is buntàta, ach 's e gu bheil an t-òran seo dèante ann an 'ùr-nòs' mar gum biodh, agus 's e sin a tha a' còrdadh rium.

Nowt wrong with songs about tatties and sheep, but I like this song as it's in a modern style.

Gu mi-fhortanach, nì cus òrain ùra sa Ghàidhlig dìreach atharrais air òrain sa Bheurla--na h-aon ruitheim 's fuinn mar Beurla ach le faclan Gàidhlig. Chan e "ùr-nòs" a tha sin--dìreach atharrais. Chan eil iad a' faireachdainn ceart idir air mo shon. Nam bhithinn a' bruidhinn sa Ghaidhlig ach sna ruitheim 's fuinn Beurla theireadh a h-uile duine gu bheil sin ceàrr, nach abaireadh? Ach nuair a seinnidh daoine faclan Gàidhlig ach sna ruitheim 's fuinn Beurla cliùthaichidh iad e. Gabh mo leisgeul ach chan urrainn dhomh ga thuigsinn idir. :? Chan eil adhbhar ann nach biodh òrain ùra dèante ann an nòs ùr ach fairich gu fìor mar òrain Gàidhlig an àite òrain Beurla le faclan Gàidhlig.

Ach 's e ceòladair a th'annam fhìn agus tha fhìos agam carson a tha sin: bidh daoine ag iarraidh dè is aithne dhaibh cheana agus 's e sin òrain Beurla. 'S ann banal a tha e, 's e mo bheachd.

Unfortunately, too many new songs in Gaelic simply mimic songs in English--same rhythms and cadences as English but with Gaelic words. That's not a "new style"--just mimicry. And they don't sound right at all to me. If I were to speak in Gaelic but with English rhythms and cadences everyone would say that is wrong, wouldn't they? But when people sing Gaelic words but in English rhythms and cadences they adore it. I'm sorry but I cannot understand that. There's no reason that new songs couldn't be made in a new style but truly feel like Gaelic songs instead of English songs with some Gaelic words.

But I'm a musician myself so I know why that is: people want what they already know and that's English songs. It's banal, if you ask me.

So a Chèid, chan eil ceòl Mhacanta a' còrdadh riut ma-thà? Na bi dragh ort, 's ann a tha ceòl tradaiseanta fìor fìor làidir ann an Saoghal na Gàidhlig ;) Cò na seinneadairean/còmhlanan-ciùil Gàidhlig as fheàrr leat-sa?

So Cèid not a fan of Macanta then? ;) Who are your favourites?

B' ann bliadhna na dhà air ais a chuala mi an t-òran a tha seo 'son a' chiad turas ,anns a' phrògram ghoirid 'Binneas' a nochdas bho àm gu àm air BBC Alba. Seo agaibh 'Tàladh Dhòmhaill Ghuirm' air a sheinn gu h-àlainn le Kathleen NicAonghais.

I first heard this song a year or two back on the short programme 'Binneas', which appears now and then on BBC Alba. Here you have 'Tàladh Dhòmhnaill Ghuirm' beautifully sung by Kathleen MacInnes.

Pardon the English-only message here (I've had a seriously awful day and I can't think in another language right now): I have have the worst time trying to find Breton music on You Tube ad I think it has to do with the search filters that are set to primarily search for Engish results when you are accessing the Internet from an English-language country. The infamous "filter bubble" phenomenon, you know? So to get past it, you need direct links like what Zviezda provided. And I like what Zviezda posted--trugarez! :)

Dwy'n licio'r gân'ma achos mae neges wleidyddol ganddi. Mae llawer o ganeuon am wlad rhywun, cariad, ac yn y blaen a dwi'n licio nhw hefyd. Ond dwi'n meddwl mae testunau fel hyn yn bwysig hefyd. Mae'r gân gwreiddiol wedi ei ysgrifennu gan yr Albanwr Eric Bogle yn Saesneg (Sorri, ceid donn ;) ). Fersiwn tipyn bach gwahanol ydy hwnnw: y "Green Fields of France" a'r fersiwn Almaenaidd hefyd ("Es ist an der Zeit"), ond mae'r un destun ganddyn nhw: oferedd rhyfel, mae pobl yn marw a does dim ots gan y rhai efo'r gwaed ar eu dwylo...

I like this song because it has a political message. There are countless songs about love, one's country and so on, and I like them as well, but I believe that messages like this are equally important. The original song was written in English by Scotsman Eric Bogle: "Green Fields of France". It is slightly different from the Welsh version, and from the German version ("Es ist an der Zeit") as well, but all three carry the same message: They are about the futility of war, about people dying without the politicians really noticing...

Lyrics

Táimse im’chodladh (‘s ná dúistear mé)

1. Tráthnóinín déanach i gcéin cois leasa dom, táimse im’ chodhladh ‘s ná dúistear mé, Sea do dhearcas lem’ thaobh an spéirbhean mhaisiúil. Táimse im’ chodladh ‘s ná dúistear mé. Ba bhachallach péarlach ó dréimreach barrachas a carnfholt craobhach ag titim léi ar bhaillechrith. ‘S í ag caitheamh na saighead trím thaobh do chealg mé. Táimse im’ chodladh ’s ná dúistear mé.

2. Is mó buachaillín óg a tógadh go ceannasach, táimse im’ chodladh ‘s ná dúistear mé, do cuireadh le foirneart anonn thar na farraige. Táimse im’ chodladh ‘s ná dúistear mé. Go bheicfeadh an lá a mbeidh ár ar Shasanaigh ughaim ar a ndroim is iad ag treabhadh is ag branar dúinn. Gan mise a bheith ann mura dtéannam an maide leo. Táimse im’ chodladh ‘s ná dúistear mé.

In English...

1. And I out late one afternoon far away by a fairy fort, I am asleep ‘n don’t wake me,I saw by my side the shiny heavenly woman. I am asleep ‘n don’t wake me. They were pearly falling curls, her waves (lit. branches) of hair that fell trembling to the groundand she was sending a sword through me that stung me [deep]. I am asleep‘n don’t wake me.

2. ‘Tis many the young boy that was forcefully taken off, I am asleep ‘n don’t wake me, that was put to slave away on the far side of the sea. I am asleep ‘n don’t wake me. Would that I see the day when the English (lit. Saxons) were bent over and they plowing and tilling for us, without me there, unless I would be offering them the plow! I am asleep ‘n don’t wake me.
Beidh Gaeilge líofa chruinn bhlasta agam nó go bhfaighe mé bás san iarracht!

Seo agaibh aon fhíseán amháin a rinne mé féin fadó de amhrán manannais faoin mbeatha aon iascaire ón nOileán Mhanainn. Ní chríochnaigh mé ach an físeán go leith, ach ní bhí sé ach triail, tar éis an tsaoil. Cuireann sé i gcuimhne dom den amhránaíocht sean-nós.

Here's a video I made a while back of a Manx song about the life of Manx fishermen of old. I only ended up finishing half of the video, and the graphics and synchronization are horrible, but after all, it was just intended to be a trial. It reminds me of the traditional Irish style of singing known as sean-nós that I'm so fond of. (English translation not equivalent to Irish.)
