This site has lots of books in Amharic (including Haddis Alemayehu's classic Fiqir Iske Meqabir) and a bunch of other languages spoken in Ethiopia :

I heard some Amharic spoken on an episode of NOVA last night. It was really cool. The script is intimidating though!

If you're studying Japanese, the Ethiopic script should look like a walk in the park! And so should most other scripts in the world... :P

Indeed, Amharic script is a lot easier then Japanese! It's a pretty standard syllabary.

I made myself a challenge of learning at least one official language of each country of the world to the beginner level (A1).
And it happens that the only African language I will have to learn (not that I don't plan to learn any others) will be Amharic as it's the sole language of Ethiopia.

I wonder, how hard is Amharic grammar?
Judging from the grammars of its language neighbours like Arabic and Hebrew it doesn't seems to be a piece of cake.
And the writing system...
I have downloaded video which teaches the Fidel (not the Cuban one! sorry for the silly joke) and I will be rewatching it several times for it to stick.

I am using アムハラ語会話基本テキスト, SF 200 Hour Familiarization Course: Introduction to Amharic and FSI Amharic Basic Course .
I hope I can manage to learn something of it.

Amharic has a rather complex and rich grammar, in verbs at least. Familiarity with other Semitic languages such as Hebrew and Arabic would be helpful, though it's not that similar. Then again, if your native language is Polish then complex grammars shouldn't be reasons for you to complain

I see... I was afraid it would be so.
Well, Polish grammar can be conplicated, but at least I didn't have to learn it as a foreign learner.
I have tried to learn both Arabic and Hebrew, but didn't went too far yet.

Regarding the script: the big tables with all consonant+vowel combinations can be discouraging, but in fact many forms are regular. I've created a webpage showing the regular and irregular formations with colors. You're welcome to have a look 8-)

Do you know a good grammar book?

I need a good grammar book. If there is, please just write out its name. ;)

The best one I know of that is a great textbook(and pretty comprehensive with it's grammar treatment) is the FSI Amharic Basic Course. Though the script is left to the second volume. Colloquial Amharic is good for a start too.

I already have them and I like them both. I needed more resources but thanks anyway ;) And I can convert the texts in the first volume (FSI Amharic Basic Course) into Ge'ez script ;)

Wolf Leslau has authored some good Amharic learning materials, most importantly a grammar or two. Unfortunately some of his stuff is hard to find now however.

Other then that, it would be a rare treat to find anything else (unless there's something in German, French, Italian or Russian that I'm unaware of).
