Translation of a song — "بنت مين"

Postby Strigo » 2013-10-05, 11:41

Hello! :) I just came across this wonderful singer from Jaffa and I would love to have a translation of her lyrics and a fonetic transcription if possible. I'm just starting to learn Arabic (fusHa, but I believe this is Palestinian Arabic). Regards! I'd appreciate it.

It does look like Palestinian dialect, but I don't know it enough to be sure - or to help much with translation...

wow(?) it doesn't make sense

smeʿti 'j-jāra hēk butʾūl
have you heard the neighbour saying so

I ran away fast

I would do more but I hate the song so much I can't even listen to it. It is Palestinian, you're right.

Do Israelis not study dialect at all or something?!

When I was in school, we had to choose whether to learn Arabic or French for a couple of years (today there are often additional options). Those who learnt Arabic anyway studied MSA, only ones such as myself who continued studying it as a sort of major learnt also the Palestinian dialect. But who remembers languages they've learnt at school anyway?...
