My thoughts are if I open this threat it might push me to actually open my recently acquired german book. ><

Just ignore this thread for now, I'll post my problems here at a later date.

Danke! (I think that's right?)

[flag]sv[/flag] Jag har en fråga. :) Hur säger man ordet "habe"? Är det som [hab], [heɪb] eller [hæb]? Och säger man e:et?

[flag]en[/flag] I have a question. :) How do you say the word "habe"? Is it like [hab], [heɪb] or [hæb]? And do you say the e?

I'd say it's supposed to be something like [ˈhaːbə] (I never learnt proper IPA for German vowels so I make my wild guesses). The German writing system is pretty phonemic so it doesn't resemble English much (I mean, the <e> in habe doesn't modify the <a>, for example).

Final <e>'s are usually pronounced (in colloquial registers they are dropped in some words, but you'll get to that later).

Hashimoto, in German every vowel is pronounced the way it's written. As a rule of thumb:
A - short [a], long [a:]
Ä - short [ɛ], long [ɛ:]
E - short [ɛ], unstressed also [ə], long [e:]
I - short [ɪ], long [i:]
O - short [ɔ], long [o:]
Ö - short [œ], long [ø:]
U - short [ʊ], long [u:]
Ü/Y - short [ʏ], long [y:]
AI/EI/EY - [aɪ]
ÄU/EU - [ɔɪ]
AU - [aʊ]
ER - [ɐ] at the end of a word

So "Ich habe Hunger" (= I am hungry) is pronounced [ʔɪç ˈha:bə ˈhʊŋɐ].

I'm going VERY slowly in German, I need to make sure I do it properly. I'm doing the courses on livemocha alongside the estonian course and it asked me after the first lesson:

Jeweils zwei Eigenschaften benutzen, um sechs verschiedene Leute zu beschreiben: eine Frau, ein Mann, ein Junge, ein Mädchen, du und ich. z.B. Der Junge ist jung und groß.

which after utilising google, half understood what to do. People on there are really slow, so I'll post my very brainless attempt at writing some sentences here for you's to laugh at :D

Die Frau ist dick und alt. Der junge ist klein und jung. Sie ist eine Frau. Er ist ein Mann. Du bist dick und hässlich.

:D Tack :)

Junge with a capital letter, the rest is correct. :) And the combination "klein und jung" sounds a bit weird as it's a bit of the same in this context, but I guess that's not the problem here. :)

Crud. The whole capitalising capitals thing is gonna take a while to get used to me thinks.

"unmäßig" -> "übermäßig"

If you want to translate "number" in the meaning of "quantity" to German, use "Anzahl"... "Nummern" are, for example, 7, 8, 9, 10 etc. ;)

You should glad be, that we so many commas use, because it, due to our rather confusing syntax, for language learners difficult to see might be, where a sentences begins and where it ends. ;)

I've always been rather fond of commas, so I like that German uses a lot.

You should be glad that we use so many commas, because(,) due to our rather confusing syntax, it might be difficult to see where sentences begin and (where they) end.

In correct my English.  :D

Die Deutsche benutzen eine unmäßige Nummer von Kommata

-> Die Deutschen benutzen eine übermäßige Anzahl an Kommata.
-> Die Deutschen benutzen übermäßig viele Kommata.

Although "Kommata" is the correct plural, most Germans say "Kommas" or "Kommatas" anyway
