Come out of the closet in German?

Postby benjamino59 » 2014-04-11, 21:13

How would I say "to come out of the closet" (as in telling people you're gay) in German?

The idiom I've most frequently come across is "Coming-Out haben/machen".

E.g.: "Schließlich habe Berlins regierender Bürgermeister Wowereit (SPD) bereits vor zwölf Jahren sein Coming-out gehabt."
"Richmond is a real scholar; Owen just learns languages because he can't bear not to know what other people are saying."--Margaret Lattimore on her two sons

So "It's hard to come out of the closet" would be something like "Coming-Out machen ist sehr schwer"?

Also, I was just browsing a German gay forum and someone used "Ich will mich outen". Is that a common expression? (I have to use it for my upcoming oral German exam, so it should preferably be common in Hauptdeutsch)

"Hauptdeutsch"?

It's the title for a presentation where I have to talk about myself.

Oh, so something like "being me"? Neither. The copula never takes an oblique case in German.

Yeah. Would it then be "Ich sein" or "Mich zu sein" or something else?

The copula never takes an oblique case in German. The German for "It's me" is "Ich bin's".

Mich can only be the object of a transitive verb and sein is not a transitive verb. Sein can take a dative object, but only when combined with an adjective in something called a "dative construction", e.g. Es ist mir warm.. Here mir represents the logical subject of the sentence, but grammatically it's treated as an object.

The title you want is "Ich sein".

I don't want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone if possible, Jew, gentile, black man, white. We all want to help one another, human beings are like thatWe want to live by each other's happiness, not by each other's misery. We don't want to hate and despise one another
