Gendered words in Russian?

Postby ChronoC » 2014-06-12, 23:40

I've been trying to figure out if there is a rhyme or reason for words that are gendered or not, and I figured that would be my question for here.

Do you have any examples of these words?

I'm guessing he phrased his question awkwardly and meant to ask whether there is any way to determine the gender of a noun in Russian just from looking at it. As I understand it, yes, there is.

The nominative case forms of masculine nouns generally end in a consonant, those of feminine nouns generally end in -а or -я, and those of neuter nouns generally end in -о, -ё, or -е. However, some nouns that end in a soft consonant are feminine, so the gender of nouns that end in a soft consonant has to be memorized. (However, all nouns that end in -жь, -шь, -чь, or -щь are feminine).

Хорошо, тогда попробуйте определить род следующих имен существительных: "бигуди, ботинки, канифоль, Бериша, виски".
Список можно продолжить, но я выбрал слова почти всех типов.
