Here's another one: сейчас - сей|час ('this time' -- although I believe время has become the normal word for 'time')
It's quite interesting - I wonder why сей fell out of common use and gave way to этот. Also I'd not be surprised if сей and Ukrainian 'цей' share a similar etymology.

According to Rudnyc'ky's dictionary, Ukr. cej is contracted from ot (cf. Russian vot) + sej. It seems to me that Ukrainian is the Slavic language where this pronoun (*sĭ) is best preserved. In Polish you only see it in the fossilized phrase do siego roku (sth like 'Happy New Year') and in words like dziś 'today' (from *dĭnĭ-sĭ lit. day-this).
Vîntŭ îl hrănea, apa-l îmbrăca, focŭ îl păzea, dă pămînt ferea.
Și la moartea-i, cădea-va o stea

Как у тебя "смешной" акцент? У нас иностранцев всех есть свои разные акценты. А русские хорошо привыкнувшие к людуям которые говорят на их родном языке с акцентом, так что ничего страшного. Или заметил(а) ты ли что ты произносишь какие-то слова совсем по другому что люди думает ты что-нибудь смешное сказал(а)??

Я думаю, что девчонка маленькая девочка. И, что девушка может быть 18-летняя женщина. Я прав?

Девушка is a young girl, she can be 14-40 y.o. maybe older :) She should look young, and generally it is evident that this girl is ready for adult sexual life.

Девочка is a girl that looks too young for sexual life, the age is probably less than 12-14 y.o.

Девчонка is emotional word that describes a girl. It can be applied to both девушка и девочка.

For example:

смешная девчонка - funny girl
дрянная девчонка - dirty girl

Plural form девчонки! can be used as form of address to group of girls, it is a colloquial form and used among friends.

I hope it's more clear now :)

У меня вопрос: насколько часто используется окончание -ою (вместо -ой) с творительным падежом женского рода? Зависит ли это от возраста говорящего, от места его рождения и т.д.?

Hi,

the lack of perfective and pluperfective tense in Russian still bugs me a bit. Please tell, if I have understood this right.

I have studied Russian for four years (and I'm still studying).

Я четыре года изучал русский язык. Изучал is imperfective aspect.

Я четыре года изучил русский язык. Изучил is perfective aspect, so the English translation is not correct. The meaning changes to I have studied Russian for four years (and I'm not studying it anymore).

Is this correct?

And would the best way to translate the whole sentence be:

Я уже четыре года изучаю русский язык.

Чёрт, чувствую что ничего не знаю. В школе не ходил в этом году, в сентябре начинаю учёбу в университете. Писание на русском - только страдание.

Aivan. Turhuuksien turhuus, kaikki on turhuutta. Mutta yritän selittää monimutkaisuuksia esimerkkejä antaen. Ensinnä, seuraava lause on täysin väärä:

Я четыре года изучил русский язык.

Tämä lause kuulostaa puutteelliselta. Perfektiivistä aspektia käyttäen ilmaistaan aina päättynyttä prosessia. Jos halutaan sanoa, että venäjän kieli on opiskeltu neljä vuotta (mutta ei opiskella enää), käytetään imperfektiivistä verbiä:

Я изучал русский язык четыре года (но больше уже не изучаю).
Minä opiskelin venäjää neljä vuotta (mutten opiskele enää).

Kun halutaan ilmaista jatkuvaa prosessia, käytetään taas samanlaista:

Я изучаю русский язык (уже) четыре года (и продолжаю изучать).
Minä olen opiskellut venäjää (jo) neljä vuotta (ja olen vieläkin sitä opiskelemassa).

Tuskin joku käytettäisi verbiä "изучать" perfektiivissä muodossa kielten opiskelemisen suhteen. Voisiko joku saada koko kielen opituksi? Mutta kieliopin voi kyllä oppia.

Я изучаю русский язык уже четыре года и изучил полностью всю русскую грамматику.
Minä olen opiskellut venättä jo neljä vuotta ja olen oppinut koko venäjän kieliopin.

Seuraava lause on myös mahdollinen:

Я изучил русскую грамматику четыре года назад.
Minä opin venäjän kieliopin neljä vuotta sitten.

Toivottavasti pääset asiasta jyvälle. Jos sinulla on kysyttävää jotakin lisää, älä ujostele kysyä.
Valitan tekemiäni virheitä.

Поздравляю. Хотя вряд ли бы я счёл эту книгу романом. Это, скорее, рассказ для детей.
Onnittelen. Vaikka tuskin luulisin tätä kirjaa romaaniaksi. Tämä on ehkä lapsille tarkoitettu kertomus.

Ну да, ты прав, это рассказ.
Меня в книжном шкафу ожидает книга Татьяны Толстой, "Кысь". Она кажется интересной. Надеюсь, что текст не слишком трудном окажается для моего уровня.

En tiedä, minkätasoinen venäjäsi on, mutta kirjoittamistasi lauseista päätellen sinä osaat erinomaisen hyvin venäjää. Hatunnoston arvoista!

Листая упомянутую книгу, я встретил слова, неизвестные даже мне. Впрочем, их значение можно извлечь из контекста. Приятного чтения!
Mainittua kirjaa selaillen kohtasin jopa minulle tuntemattomia sanoja. Niiden merkitys on kuitenkin käyttöyhteydestä saatavissa. Hauskaa lukemista!

I'm having a bit of trouble with the accent, and I realize that I just started with the language but are there any tips? I'm from the southern US and have noted that this makes developing an accent fairly difficult from any of the languages I've studied (not to mention I'm missing parts of my mouth due to cleft palate surgery) I have particular difficulty with the short e sounds Eg: Het
