Twitter and YouTube ban in Turkey

Postby Aisling » 2014-03-30, 10:55

What do you think about the censorship of Twitter and YouTube here in Turkey? Unfortunately, our government blocked these two popular sites. Our government proposed a new internet law, and threatened Twitter, YouTube and Facebook with banning them. All of them except Facebook have been banned by our government. Some people are using DNSs or alternative ways to enter Twitter or YouTube.

I think that our freedom of speech mustn't be restricted. People are using social media to express their opinions. They don't have to block the whole site.

This message appears when I try to enter YouTube:

I saw people on twitter mentioning that Turkish Telecoms in man-in-the-middle'ing traffic to Google's DNS now. In the past, Turkish website bans could be easily circumvented by switching your DNS servers to 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4.

Which basically boils down to what I always thought: we need an alternative to the Internet, where the infrastructure is controlled by the users (I will call this Network Socialism  )

Something like the Wireless Metropolitan Network in Greece

Those DNSs were banned in the past, but the government unblocked the DNSs. But there are also other alternative ways to enter Twitter or YouTube. I won't mention the alternative ways, since here is a forum.

These men of government have got a big problem: they need the Internet but the Internet is hard to control as they wish. So much worse for them. 8-)
On the other hand I think that a government that is honest and correct toward the people of its country should not fear social networks.

I've found an article, with a link to (guess what) a video on Youtube, that might be interesting.

However I cannot frankly comment the article above because I don't know much about the situation in Turkey. Anyway I find pretty sad that you've got your freedom to use Twitter and Youtube restricted.
But If I recall correctly I've heard that some people in the Turkish institutions have expressed discomfort with the ban, so I really envy your country in this.
In mine that would simply be science-fiction. :(
Think that here with the excuse of piracy a big social network, vkontakte, has been banned in the almost complete silence of the media.
Fletto i muscoli e sono nel vuoto!
All corrections are welcome and appreciated.

I see it as an own goal for Erdoğan. Some people have even been calling it an instance of the Streisand Effect. I disagree for the reasons laid out in this commentary, but I think the author is right to point out how it makes Erdoğan look weak at a critical time and, thus, risks becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. For the sake of democracy in Turkey, I hope he's right.

Sounds too much like Nazism. I'd call it Tron.

Heh, touché.
Anarcho-connectivity is all nice and libertarian though.

Erdoğan's take on "The Great Firewall of China"?

I see at least two major flaws...

1) The Turkish version is limited to a few, albeit popular, sites.

2) Even in China, where it's a lot more encompassing, people know how to circumvent it

I've read that the ban (on Twitter at least) was lifted by the high court in Ankara, on the grounds of harming free speech. Good thing the court still has power over the government when it goes too far.

We'll see how long that lasts after Erdoğan's reelection.
