It has always a question to me why we call the Yangtze the Yangtze if Chinese people call it the Chang2Jiang1 [long river]. Finally a friend explained to me that near the coast where the river meets the ocean the people do call it something close to Yangtze, however farther inland people call it Chang2Jiang1. If you are interested here is a link for further information.

To be more accurate, the whole river is called 長江 Changjiang, but the section near the ocean is called 揚子江 Yangzijiang. When the Europeans came to China, they came by the ocean and therefore encountered the name "Yangzi" first, which is why in many Western languages, the whole river is referred to as "Yangtze".

Actually, the name 扬子江 is not very common. At least I don't hear it often. I've only encountered it in dictionaries and school textbooks. :)
