Attempt at translating a song. I know it is not a very good translation and I would greatly appreciate any corrections.
Στίχοι: Δημήτρης Τσούκας
Μουσική: Ελεάνα Βραχάλη
Πρώτη εκτέλεση: Μιχάλης Χατζηγιάννης
Greek lyrics taken from stixoi.info

Πιο ζεστό φιλί-----------------A hotter kiss
δεν ένιωσα ξανά----------------I haven't had another time
και με νικά.-------------------and with no one
Μαζί σου ό,τι έζησα------------What I lived with you
αγκαλιά γερή-------------------a strong hug
Σύμπτωση απλή------------------simple coincidence
που επέζησα.-------------------which went away.

Λες, είναι σκληρό--------------You say it was hard
με τόσο εγωισμό----------------with all the egoism
και με θυμό.-------------------and the anger
Σε σένα ν'απευθύνομαι----------to respect you
αν σε πίστεψα------------------If i had thought
Εγώ μονάχα Εγώ-----------------I, only I
ευθύνομαι.---------------------am to blame.

Τι να πω κι εγώ----------------what to say and I
που όλα τα περίμενα.-----------who have waited all this
Μα, έγιναν αλλιώς--------------but, it turned otherwise
που άναβες φωτιές--------------for you set fires on
με όλα αυτά που μου'ταζες.-----with all that you used to promise me
Μα, έμειν' ο καπνός.-----------but turned into smoke (disappeared?)

Δες, γυρίζω εδώ----------------__, i`m turning here
μετά από καιρό-----------------after some time
και σου ζητώ-------------------and I am looking for you
ακόμα μια συνάντηση.-----------still/yet one meeting
Μα στα δύσκολα-----------------but a hard one
Δεν έχεις ούτε μια-------------There wasn't another
Απάντηση!----------------------Answer !

I love this singer and this song. I think he is the only European-style pop singer in Greece. The rest are more of balkanic type :P

*κι εγώ is literally translated as "me too", but here it aims to denote humbleness and lack of expectations. Like "everyone couldn't say something, how could I do it?" Other examples:

Τι να κάνω κι εγώ; Εδώ ο πρόεδρος δεν κατάφερε να κάνει κάτι! - What can I do? Even the president didn't manage to do smth
Τι να σου κάνει τώρα και ο γέρος; - What [do you expect from] the old man to do? :P

I like him too. However, I think he sounds a bit like Enrique Iglesias sometimes and that is why I think of him as of the Greek Enrique 8). Not that I don't have many of Enrique Iglesias' albums :P.
I was planning to translate Σώμα μου of Νότης Σφακιανάκης but I saw someone has already translated it. So I am going to try:

Στίχοι: Ελεάνα Βραχάλη
Μουσική: Μιχάλης Χατζηγιάννης
Πρώτη εκτέλεση: Μιχάλης Χατζηγιάννης
Lyrics taken from stixoi.info

Είναι χειμώνας κι όπως πρέπει θα ντυθώ το βράδυ που έρχεται.=It is a winter and as I have to, I will put on what is suitable for the evening.
Και κάποιο λάθος που στο σώμα μου χρωστώ ο νους δεν το δέχεται.=And my brain won't accept some mistake due to my body
Κι αν φύγω από δω με σένα δύσκολα τελειώνω,= and if i leave from sight with you a hard end,
μέσα μου σε κρατώ λες κι είσαι κάτι σωστό.=Something in myself keeps saying you are something correct.

μα εσύ συνέχεια με κερδίζεις = But you continue to win me
για μια ζωή νικάς = a win for a life
Σκληρά μακριά μου φεύγεις = It is hard to run far away form me.
μα πιο σκληρά γυρνάς = but you turn harder.

Είναι χειμώνας τα παράθυρα ανοιχτά μα ήδη αρρώστησα. = it is a winter and the open windows are already ill (it must be some idiom for it doesn't make sense to me)
Ξέρεις καλά πως στα παράλογα μπροστά το κόστος δε ρώτησα = You know well how at the absurd in front of the price didn't ask
Κι αν φύγω από δω θα αλλάξω πρόσωπο σαν κλέφτης. = And if I leave from sight the face will change as a thief.
Μέσα μου σε κρατώ λες κι είσαι κάτι σωστό. = Something in myself keeps saying you are something correct.

Δεν έχω ακούσει ποτέ τραγούδι τού Ενρίκε Ιγκλέσιας :noclue: .

Αυτό ήταν το δυσκολότερο τραγούδι που προσπάθησε ποτέ κάποιος να μεταφράσει εδώ. :wink:

I never heard any song by Enrique Iglesias :noclue: .

This is the hardest song one ever tried to translate here :wink: .

Ι will give you a small text here and you can try to translate it. I tried to find a medium difficulty one from an online newspaper (kathimerini.gr).

.

Glossary:

φανός = lamp (rare word)
γκάζι = gaz
Σορβόννη = Sorbonne
Άλπεις = Alpes

Καλή τύχη!
Good luck!

Cool! 8) (ποιή είναι η ελληνική έκφραση - κρότο; )

People - you're welcome to try by yourselves before studying my mistakes :P

"It is the capital of France here and for at least a thousand years, both governing the majority of the country's economy and, for many, being simply the most beautiful city in the world...

Know that...
* Paris has been known in history as the City of Light ever since 1828, when its main boulevards were lit with gas lamps.
* The Eiffel Tower has over 6 million visitors annually, and in the year 2002 it reached a total of 200 million tourists ever since its construction (1889).
* The Sorbonne is the oldest university north of the Alps. It was built in the 13th century.
"

"Φανός" είναι σπανιή λέξι; :( Την βρήκα στο λεξικό. Είναι η προέλευση της Εβραϊκής λέξεως "πανάς" (פנס)
Πώς τα έβαλες τα βολιά στον κατάλογο;

Babelfish wrote:Cool! 8) ([s]ποιή[/s] ποιά είναι η ελληνική έκφραση - κρότο; )

"Ωραία", "καλή φάση", "φίνα" would do fine. The latter is not used a lot, though, I think.

I wasn't going to (because maybe you prefer to be corrected by native speakers), but I decided to just let you know about the expression "εδώ και". It means "ago" ("εδώ και 3 χρόνια" would be "3 years ago" for example).
Babelfish wrote:"It is the capital of France [s]here and[/s] for at least a thousand years

So this would be "...capital of France for at least a thousand years", or you could say "it was already the capital of France at least a thousand years ago".

Babelfish wrote:"Φανός" είναι [s]σπανιή[/s] σπάνια λέξι;

I really think so. You have words like "epiphany" coming from that, too. Today it's more normally used meaning "street light" (the one on the street, for cars, with green, yellow and red colors), the same as "φανάρι". It's basically an old Attic Greek form, related also to "φαεινός" (bright, brilliant) - there's the expression "φαεινή ιδέα", for example.

Thanx for the explanation, HaggenKennedy, the first sentence did sound somewhat weird to me :)

:hmm: That's a good idea, I tried to translate it on a sheet of paper, I was too diligent to give up. I printed the text and then pondered over it... I am going to post my attempt when I go back home... I think it counts that I tried after all! Thanks :)

Ah, but it does, indeed! After all, the translation will help you, not those who already know Greek. So you do it in order to improve your own skills. It'll sure help. :)

Ah, but it does, indeed! After all, the translation will help you, not those who already know Greek. So you do it in order to improve your own skills. It'll sure help. :)

Yeah really! But if I succeed to do it well it will impress them :whistle:, not me.... Not that I am a poser... it is just that... ... ... ... ... ...

People - you're welcome to try by yourselves before studying my mistakes :P

"It is the capital of France [s]here and[/s] for at least a thousand years, both controlling the major part of the country's economy and, for many, being simply the most beautiful city in the world...

Did you know that...
"

Ο "Φανός" είναι σπάνια λέξη; :( Την βρήκα στο λεξικό. Είναι η ρίζα της εβραϊκής λέξεως "πανάς" (פנס)
Πώς τα έβαλες τα βολιά στον κατάλογο;

("great film").

Hey, this is not a competition. Don't read his translation, -besides it may contain some mistakes that you shouldn't read- just post yours. I'll be waiting :wink:
