księżyc - Polski

Postby księżycowy » 2013-02-06, 23:21

Dzień dobry!
I've finally started by journey into Polish. :D I'll use this thread to ask questions, post observations, and to post my answers to exercises in my textbook(s) (as a few of my textbooks don't have answer keys).

I'll post the exercises to lesson one of Beginning Polish by Schenker tomorrow.

As the textbook I'm using right now is a bit dated (1973) please let me know of any vocabulary or style changes. Thanks!

Exercises - Lesson 1
1a. To jest gazeta.
To jest portmonetka.
To jest puderniczka.
To jest zeszyt.
To jest długopis.
To jest ołówek.
To jest pióro.
To jest lusterko.
To jest zdjęcie.
To są pieniądze.

1b. To nie jest gazeta.
To nie jest portmonetka.
To nie jest puderniczka.
To nie jest zeszyt.
To nie jest długopis.
To nie jest ołówek.
To nie jest pióro.
To nie jest lusterko.
To nie jest zdjęcie.
To nie są pieniądze.

2a. To są okulary.
To są nożyczki.

2b. To nie są okulary.
To nie są nożyczki.

3c. To jest ściana, a to jest mapa
To jest lampa, a to jest tablica.
To jest podłoga, a to jest sufit.
To jest stół, a to jest śmiecie kosz.
To jest okno, a to jest krzesło.
To jest biurko, a to są drzwi.

Notes:
-długopis and pióro - are both in common usage?
-I have no idea at this point what the word for "trash can," or "waste paper basket" is, so I made "śmiecie kosz." I have no idea if that is right. Probably not. :P

długopis - ballpoint pen
pióro - fountain pen (also: wieczne pióro)

Trash can - kosz na śmieci (śmieci/śmiecie are interchangeable in the nominative & accusative pl, I mostly use the former form)

3a. Czy to jest ściana, czy mapa?

It's very common to drop the first czy (i.e. yes/no question marker) in casual speech and to let intonation do the whole job.

3c. To jest ściana, a to jest mapa

Generally, you could omit the second jest (...a to mapa) in this sentence type, I think it would then sound a little more natural.

I had wondered if any shortening was possible for those sentences/questions, thanks for the tips!

I had never heard of "puderniczka".

To be honest, I also had never heard of "(powder) compact".

Yeah, it's an older textbook, so some vocabulary like that is in there (hence my question about pens earlier). I can't imagine that puderniczka is any more common then compact in English now-a-days. I've never heard anyone say it in English, though my grandmother, and maybe my mother, have had one.

Współcześnie kobiety też używają różnorakich przyrządów, których przeznaczenie jest dla mnie czarną magią, nie mówiąc już o nazwie.

I’ve heard the word many times, I even know how it looks like. Obviously the word is still in use.

All the vocabulary you used looks very common to me.

Bo jest Pan Polakiem!

The Poles I asked about it don't find that vocabulary so common, though they know what a "puderniczka" is. And also what a "pudernica" is.

I would probably guess in Italian what a portacipria is, but I had never used the word myself... until now.

Time for a very belated update.

Lesson 2 exercises:
1a.
Czyja to jest gazeta?
Czyja to jest portmonetka?
Czyja to jest puderniczka?
Czyj to jest zeszyt?
Czyj to jest długopis?
Czyj to jest ołówek?
Czyje to jest pióro?
Czyje to jest lusterko?
Czyje to jest zdjęcie?
Czyje to są okulary?
Czyje to są nożyczki?
Czyje to są pieniądze?

1b.
To jest moja gazeta.
To jest moja portmonetka.
To jest moja puderniczka.
To jest mój zeszyt.
To jest mój długopis.
To jest mój ołówek.
To jest moje pióro.
To jest moje lusterko.
To jest moje zdjęcie.
To są moje okulary.
To są moje nożyczki.
To są moje pieniądze.

1c.
Gdzie jest pańska gazeta?
Gdzie jest pańska portmonetka?
Gdzie jest pańska puderniczka?
Gdzie jest pański zeszyt?
Gdzie jest pański długopis?
Gdzie jest pański ołówek?
Gdzie jest pańskie pióro?
Gdzie jest pańskie lusterko?
Gdzie jest pańskie zdjęcie?
Gdzie są pańskie okulary?
Gdzie są pańskie nożyczki?
Gdzie są pańskie pieniądze?

That will be enough for now. I haven't quite made it all the way through the lesson yet anyway.
I'll post the rest of the exercises in a few days.
I'm not thinking there will be many (if any) corrections, but feel free to prove me wrong. :P

So far I'm finding it easy. Ask me again in a few weeks.
