Question about lille/vesle/små usage

Postby oxknuckle » 2014-05-22, 1:26

I know normally when an adjective is used in a construction like 'den store boka' or 'disse gamle husene' the plural form of the adjective doubles as an all-purpose definite adjective.  But what do you do with an irregular adjective like 'liten'?

Would you say 'de lille/vesle guttene' or 'de små guttene'?

Lille/vesle are singular definite forms. "Små" is plural.

So you'd say: "de små guttene".

ein liten gut - den vesle guten - små[e] gutar - dei vesle/små[e] gutane
ei lita jente - den vesle jenta - små[e] jenter - dei vesle/små[e] jentene
eit lite hus - det vesle huset - små[e] hus - dei vesle/små[e] husa

Vesle is not used as a predicate though:

Verda er lita.
Husa er småe.
