How to say this?

Postby wolverine » 2014-08-19, 22:13

So I may be going to Norway next year and one of the things I will probably need to say is 'Please speak slower, I have poor/bad/crap hearing' (depending on whether I'm in polite company or not).

What is the appropriate way to parse this in Norsk? I didn't want to try and work it out myself in case I got it wrong.

That's exciting that you might be traveling to Norway next year. :y: I'm jealous. ;)

Before my first trip to Norway I was told that the following was a polite way to ask a Norwegian to "please speak a little slower:"

As far as the second part of your question goes, I'd recommend waiting until some of our native Norwegian speaking forum members reply. :)

Hello there! :)

"Kunne du snakket litt saktere?" is a good and natural way to ask someone to speak a little more slowly. Raufoss' sentence also works, though with a slight correction: "vær så snill og snakk litt saktere"

As for the second part, from most to least polite:
"Jeg hører dårlig"
"Jeg hører dritdårlig"
"Hørselen min er ræva"

Understands some (nl) Mom's side of the family (fo) Studies now and then (et) Curious about (cs)

My attempts at approximate translations:

I hear poorly (I hear bad)

I hear very poorly (I hear shit bad)

My hearing is absolutely terrible (My hearing is ass)

Thanks for the vocabulary! I'll note those down, and practise saying them, cause I will almost certainly need them.

Had a good laugh after reading that. Thanks! Is it common to use that expression in Norway nowadays? I haven't been back there in a while now.

Tusen takk!
