Currently Learning Lithuanian

Postby luap » 2006-03-27, 20:32

Hello,

Currently I am learning Lithuanian thanks to the Online course of the Uni of Washington - I only started last night so would it be possible to clear up a few things.

Firstly is the Genitive - Showing relationship between things - Such as "Jie yra iš vilniaus" They are from Vilnius, Is this an example of this as is says they are from Vilnius (Showing Relationship).

Secondly I hear that Locative shows location - Would this mean that when you are talking about a city like Kaunas and you said it is in Lithuania than would you say Lietuvoje instead of Lietuva.

--------------------

P.S Would it be possible for someone to have a look at this translation and give you verdict

Tomas ir Daiva yra vyras ir žmona. Daiva yra lietuvė. Ji yra iš Lietuvos. Jos vyras Tomas yra amerikietis. Jis gyvena Amerikoje, Konektikute. Tomas yra iš Niujorko. Tomas ir Daiva kalba angliškai. Tomas kalba angliškai, ispaniškai ir prancūziškai, bet nekalba lietuviškai. Daiva kalba lietuviškai ir vokiškai.
Tomas dirba banke. Jis yra bankininkas. Jo mama dirba ligoninėje. Ji yra gydytoja. Jos vardas - Diana. Ji yra iš Kanados. Kur yra Kanada? Šiaurės Europoje.
Daiva dirba parduotuvėje. Ji yra pardavėja. Jos mama ir tėvas gyvena Lietuvoje, Klaipėdoje. Jos mama dirba akvariume, o tėvas dirba restorane. Mamos vardas Eugenija, o tėvo vardas Kęstutis.

Tomas and Daiva are husband and wife. Daiva has become Lithuanian. She is from Lithuania. The Husband Tomas is American, He lives in America, Connecticut. Tomas is from New York. Tomas and Daiva speak English. Tomas speaks English, Spanish and French, but he doesn’t speak Lithuanian. Daiva speaks Lithuanian and German.
Tomas works in a Bank, He is a banker. His mother works in a hospital, she is a women doctor. Her name is Diana. She is from Canada . Where is Canada? North Europe.
Daiva works in a shop. She is a sales woman. Her mother and father live in Lithuania, Klaipedia. Her mother works in an aquarium, but her father works in a restaurant. Mums name is Eugenia, but dads name is Kestuits.

Thank you

Paul

Glad to hear that ;)

Firstly is the Genitive - Showing relationship between things - Such as "Jie yra iš vilniaus" They are from Vilnius, Is this an example of this as is says they are from Vilnius (Showing Relationship).

Actually genitive represent the belonging, say, "knyga yra Manto" [the book is Mantas'] tells that "knyga" belongs to Mantas, but various verbs and prepositions might require one of the cases with no clear reason. For example, "Lietuvoje yra miškų" tells that in Lithuania there are / exist some forests while "Lietuvoje yra miškai" tells that some exact forests are in Lithuania. No other cases can be use in this sentence.

Telling it in short, genitive represents "of" preposition, dative "for", partitive tells that you do smth with smth (in "I read a book", "book" would be in partitive), instrumental represents "by" in most cases ("I drive by a car").

Secondly I hear that Locative shows location - Would this mean that when you are talking about a city like Kaunas and you said it is in Lithuania than would you say Lietuvoje instead of Lietuva.

Yes, it should be "Lietuvoje".

Taip ir nesupratau, ką reiškia: dirbti akvariume? Mano supratimu, akvariumas -- tai toks imlumas, kur žuvys plaukia. :) Kaip (ir, svarbiau, kuo) galima jame dirbti?

Galima taip sakyti, jei ji dirba kažkokio didelio akvariumo įstaigoje ;)
