Forum Information

Postby Yserenhart » 2013-10-12, 5:03

1. Recent forum changes

    • General Topics and Information (Unilang - Information, Input, and Questions, Meetings and Forum Archives) forums made unreadable for non-registered users.
    • General Forums category created.
      • General Topics, Cultures, and General Languages moved into General Forums.
    • Information category created
      • Unilang - Information, Input, and Questions and Forum archives moved into Information.
    • Other languages given own forum within Language-Specific Forums.
    • Conlang-specific Translations forum added to Conlangs.
    • Games forum moved into General Languages. Scripts and Writing Systems forum deleted with threads merged into General Languages.
    • Cultures moved from General Languages into own forum, and renamed Culture. Literature and Politics and Religion forums moved into Culture.
    • Software and Technology forum deleted with threads merged into General Topics.
    • Meetings moved into Unilang - Information, Input, and Questions.
    • New BBCode for flags. This new code allows you to add the name of the language, or other descriptive text that will appear when someone hovers over the flag.
    An example use:

    Code: Select all

    [flag=Vlaams (Flemish)]nl-BE[/flag]
    gives Vlaams (Flemish) (nl-BE).
Note that you do not have to enter anything after the "=" for the code to work. Also note that some redirects to wikipedia may not work correctly. If you find a non-working redirect, please let us know in the Issues and Bugs thread.

2. General Information
    • If you see a spammer please only report them once. We have the ability to see and remove all posts made by them at once, so reporting multiple posts by the same spammer just gives us more reports to close. Anyone who frequently reports multiple posts by the same spammer may be given a warning.

    • The 'Reasons' field in the report screen is a drop down menu, please click on it to find the most relevant option for your report.

    • If you wish to contact an administrator or global mod about something related to the site or forum please PM the group as a whole, not to an individual member. This allows us to deal with the issue faster and more efficiently. You can see a list of groups at the upper-right corner of the PM window, and any group listed there may be added as recipient from that list.

A note on reports:

When you make a report, you will see there is a field in which to give a reason for the report. While this doesn't show, that field is actually a drop down list. When you make a report please click on this drop down list and select the most appropriate reason for making the warning, this makes it easier for us to deal with the issue.

We have made a BBCode for adding your own custom flags to the forum to match the existing flags. The usage is

Code: Select all

[ownflag={Descriptor text goes here}]{image url goes here}[/ownflag]

Enjoy.

We have added a BBCode to complement the current spoiler function. The new code allows text to be hidden with a show/hide button, very useful for those long blocks of text and quotes :).

To use:

Code: Select all

[hide]{Text to be hidden}[/hide]
(or click the button on the posting page)
The result:
Native: Derbyshire English (en-GB)/New Zealand English (en-NZ) Learning: Vlaams (Flemish) (nl-BE)

We are currently going through and cleaning up the General Language Forum and the General Topics forum to make them easier for you to navigate and for us to moderate.

This means that we will delete some old threads that have no discussions in them whatsoever, but are only about wishing a happy birthday or similar, and we will also archive any thread that hasn't had a new post since January 1st 2009.

There has been a few questions about issues that in the end boil down to the e-mail functions of the forum not working. This is what the owner of the forum has said about it:

proycon wrote:I had to temporarily disable outgoing mail for the forum, because gmail suddenly seems to flag all messages from our mailserver as spam, possibly because certain gmail users report messages from us as spam.

I'm trying to find a solution but in the meantime i had to stop the outgoing mail. This also goes for the webmaster@unilang.org and forum@unilang.org addresses, as those receive a fair amount of spam, and a small portion of not caught by my spam filter may get forwarded.
