Poetry कविता شاعری

Postby Nazīr » 2010-12-07, 4:54

Since the Indian Subcontinent has such a rich poetic tradition, I felt that there should be a separate space just for sharing, translating and discussing poetry.

Poems can be posted in any script (Hindi, Urdu, Roman). Please translate them if you can. Many poems have also been performed to music, so feel free to share these vocal renditions as well.

I'm not as familiar with Hindi poetry as I am with Urdu poetry, but hopefully I will soon get to learn more about the former here.

My favorite poets include Iqbal, Faiz, Ahmad Faraz, and Habib Jalib. I look forward to sharing poems by each of them.

O Khusro, the river of love runs in strange directions. |
The one who enters it drowns, and the one who drowns, gets across. |

Kabhi Kabhi mere dil mein khayaal aata hai
Kabhi Kabhi mere dil mein khayaal aata hai
Ki jaise tujhko banaya gaya hai mere liye
Ki jaise tujhko banaya gaya hai mere liye
Tu abse pehle sitaaron mein bas rahi thi kahin
Tu abse pehle sitaaron mein bas rahi thi kahin
Tujhe zameen pe bulaya gaya hai mere liye
Tujhe zameen pe bulaya gaya hai mere liye

Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayaal aata hai
Ki ye badan ye nigaahein meri amaanat hain
Ki ye badan ye nigaahein meri amaanat hain
Ye gesuon ki ghani chhaon hain meri khatir
Ye honth aur ye baahein meri amaanat hain
Ye honth aur ye baahein meri amaanat hain

Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayaal aata hai
Ki jaise bajti hain shehnaaiyaan si raahon mein
Ki jaise bajti hain shehnaaiyaan si raahon mein
Suhaag raat hain ghoonghat utha raha hoon main
Suhaag raat hain ghoonghat utha raha hoon main
Simat rahi hai tu sharma ke apni baahon mein
Simat rahi hai tu sharma ke apni baahon mein

Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayaal aata hai
Ki jaise tu mujhe chaahegi Umra bhar yuhin
Uthegi meri taraf pyaar ki nazar yuhin
Main jaanta hoon ki tu gair hai magar yoohin
Main jaanta hoon ki tu gair hai magar yoohin

Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayaal aata hai
Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayaal aata hai

O Saathi Re
o saathi re tere bina bhi kya jina
oh companion, what is living without you?

phuulon men kaliyon men sapanon ki galiyon men
in flowers, in buds, in the streets of love,

tere binaa kuchh kahin na
without you there is nothing anywhere!

tere bina bhi kya jina
what is living without you?

o saathi re tere bina bhi kya jina
oh companion, what is living without you?

phuulon men kaliyon men sapanon ki galiyon men

in flowers, in buds, in the streets of love,

tere binaa kuchh kahin na

without you there is nothing anywhere!

tere bina bhi kya jina

what is living without you?

jaane kaise anajaane hi aan basaa koi pyaase man men

i wonder how, without my knowing, somebody came and settled in my thirsty mind

apanaa sab kuchh kho baithe hain paagal man ke paagalapan men

in the madness of this crazed heart, we have lost everything of our own

dil ke afasaane

the stories of the heart

main jaanuun tuu jaane aur yeh jaane koi na

i know them and you know them, and no one else knows them

tere bina bhi kya jina

what is living without you?

o saathi re tere bina bhi kya jina

oh companion, what is living without you?

har dhadkan men pyaas hai teri

in every heartbeat is thirst for you;

saanson men teri khushbuu hai

in my breath is your fragrance

is dharati se us ambar tak meri nazar men tuu hi tuu hai

from this earth to that sky, in my eyes is only you all around

pyaar yeh tuute na

may this love not break

tuu mujhse ruuthe na saath ye chhuute kabhi na

may you never get angry at me, may this companionship never stop

tere bina bhi kya jina
what is living without you?

The following is a poem I stumbled across earlier this summer. It's bold subject matter and unique free verse style (known in Urdu as āzād nazm) left quite the impression on me. It's written by Sarmad Sehbai, a contemporary writer and Urdu poet from Pakistan.

As this review from Dawn explains, the poem is "is about that fleeting physical ecstasy which elevates an ordinary woman and a nondescript man to unknown heights of pleasure before they get reoccupied by the routine grind."

Being all too familiar with the stifling social conservatism of a place like Pakistan, this poem really resonated with me. And to be honest, it's the first one I've come across that directly addresses sexuality as opposed to love. I particularly admire how Sehbai fuses both the sensual and the sacred, the creativity of his language and the imagery it evokes.

I've transliterated the poem into Devanagari and Roman text and also translated it into English. As with all translations, some of the beauty of the original work is lost in the process. Nevertheless, I've included some notes on the language and Pakistani culture to help anyone interested in interpreting the poem. Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions for improvement.

Paradise for a Moment| Sarmad Sehbai

A moment within the hidden fist of the city
becomes a firefly,
fluttering.
For its sake,
we put off ages worth of sleep.

This is that moment
in which after being touched,
you become the world's most ravishing woman,
brimming with pleasure,
and I, a valiant man.

The two of us, Adam and Eve,
live in paradise for a moment.
And then you become that same meek,
bus-riding, ordinary woman.
And I that spineless, load-bearing,
ordinary man.

The two walk along the city's
roaring, restless streets,
pausing for a moment
and dreaming again of that moment.
___

ḵẖufiyā | ख़ुफ़िया | خفیہ | secret, hidden, disguised, concealed
jugnū | जुगनू | جگنو | literally meaning firefly. In the spiritual context of Sufi poetry, jugnī means the spirit or essence of life.

dilkaś | दिलकश | دلکش | attractive, charming, winsome
lazzat | लज़ज़त | لذت | pleasure, delight, enjoyment
labrīz | लबरीज़ | لبریز | full, overflowing, brimful, replete
bahādur | बहादुर | بہادر | brave, courageous, valiant

ādam aur hauvā | आदम और हौवा | آدم اور حوّا | Adam and Eve of the Abrahamic tradition
bahiśt | बहिश्त | بہثت | paradise, heaven

basōṅ par caṛhnē vālī | बसों पर चढ़ने वाली | بسوں پہ چڑھنے والی | literally meaning "one who gets on buses." As the BBC explains, women in Pakistan using public transport are often unable to board buses easily or find a seat, even in the ladies section, and many are subjected to harassment. Upper and middle class women mainly travel by car, so public transport is associated with poor or working class women.

dhakkē khānā | धक्के खाना | دھکے کھانا | literally meaning "to take pushes." This phrase is used to describe an individual who endures abuse and humiliation in his line of work or even more broadly in his life. For example when my father criticizes me for my laziness and lack of ambition, he remarks, yē dhikkē khā'ēgā, meaning I won't have a respectable career in my future.

cīḵẖ dhāṛā | चीख धाड़ | چیخ دھاڑا | literally meaning "scream-roar." This is a compound word used to describe situations that are particularly loud and noisy. A similar word, mār dhāṛ, is used when violence is involved.

Thank you for the poem!

Here's one in my Intermediate Hindi Reader that I like:

मैं नहीं चाहता चिर सुख
-सुमित्रानंदन पंत

मैं नहीं चाहता चिर सुख,
में नहीं चाहता चिर दुःख;

Can someone help translate?
I'll try a bit.

I don't want eternal joy
I don't want eternal sorrow
Joy and sorrows game of hide and seek
opened it's young mouth :?:

From joy and sorrow's sweet meeting
life becomes complete,
then in the clouds the moon disappears
then from the moon the clouds disappear!

The world is oppressed from excessive sorrow,
the world is oppressed from excessive joy,
In mankind and the world, it is divided,
Sorrow from joy, and joy from sorrow.

Perpetual sorrow is torture
perpetual joy, too, is torture,
Joy and sorrow, in night and day,
Sleep and awaken the world and life. :?:

This dusk and dawn's courtyard,
The embrace of the separation and meeting,
Eternally filled with laughter and tears the face
Of mankind and life.
:?: :?: :?:
