Can वे be spelled वह and a pronunciation question

Postby daddydave » 2011-09-15, 23:30

Textbook says the plural of वे is वह but a native speaker tells me he spells वे as वह also. Another point, the book says both of these are often pronounced vo. The native speaker says this is correct but it is pronounced vअ or vo based on how it is used. Does that sound about right?

Actually वे is plural and वह is singular. But in commonly everyday Hindi(kind that isn't used in newsbroadcasts) does not distungish different prounciation, but the verb will be different. Example:

वह... है (he/she/it is)

वे...हैं (they are).

Meera is right, your text book is wrong. वह is singular, and वे is plural. वे is pronounced just as it is written (ve). वह is pronounced as वो (vo), and sometimes spelled that way too.

Yeah, some textbooks I have always prounce both ve. Which dosn't make sense, because I always hear and stick to voh for singular and ve for plural lol. Some Hindi textbooks just confuse and make things harder.

In spoken Hindi, no one differentiates between वह and वे.

All private news channels normally use a register that is quite close to the spoken form of Hindi. 'Official' Hindi is used only in Doordarshan News bulletins.

Thanks for all the great responses. Now I have a follow-up question.

The movie Woh Lamhe

So is the movie title based off the Urdu spelling/pronunciation or what?

It's based off the way it's spoken in daily life.

Just in case you're interested to know, the 'pure' hindi title would be 'Ve kshaNN'.
