The SEAsite website is one of the best online resources out there in my opinion. (As pointed out in one of the other threads korn linked to)

I just wanted to point out a resource for Southern Vietnamese:
Spoken Vietnamese
It's an bit dated, but I think it is the Southern dialect equivalent to Elementary/Continuing Vietnamese by Binh Nhu Ngo. Though I do find it odd that they use IPA transcription in the first few lessons rather than Quốc Ngữ.

Does anyone know any good Southern Vietnamese dictionaries?
I have a good Northern one, but I'd like to get one for Southern Vietnamese too if I can.

No such thing in English I'm afraid. The only dictionaries where you can find non-Hanoi words are the Vie-Vie ones, if you already know Vietnamese well. For example. What's happening here is Hanoi has monopolised the dictionary making business in Vietnam, and tries her best to ignore other ("non-standard") varieties of Vietnamese.

Some bilingual dictionaries sometimes note very typical Southern terms like má (mẹ) and chả giò (nem rán) to name a couple. But a comprehensive dictionary? No, don't know any.

I suppose it'll have to wait until the day that I'm fluent enough to use a monolingual dictionary. Whenever that happens. :P

Or I more realistically find a speaker.

I just saw this CD: http://www.vinabook.com/hoc-tieng-viet- ... 44089.html. As the title suggests, it is a coursebook supplement to help the 2nd grade schoolkids in Vietnam learn Vietnamese through illustrated lessons. I don't know about its effectiveness to adult foreign learners, but maybe somebody may find it useful for learning or want to take a look at how native children here being educated :).

Vietnamese reading materials for beginners

Postby korn » 2013-06-17, 9:46

Hi there,

What VN novels, short stories, poems and other reading materials for beginners would you reccommend?

A book that matches all the criteria below would be much appreciated:
- Easy to read (=mostly basic vocabulary that is still in use today)
- Belongs to the "classics" of Vietnamese literature
- Is known by a lot of Vietnamese

Do you think the following books are good choices:
- Chí Phèo
- Tôn Ngộ Không
- Collection of poems for primary-school pupils

Please also make you own recommendations so this will become a long list of good reads.

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Then what kind of resources do Vietnamese-Americans (almost all Southern) use to teach their children Vietnamese? I know they would die before teaching their children to speak with a northern accent.

My teacher use a book published by Vietnam National University Hanoi, but I cannot find its information online, and he just typed the book name as 《越語(外國人學越語)》 (Foreigners learn Vietnamese). I have full audio files in 14 lessons, if you are interested I can upload them.

Here are three websites has the keyword "Học Tiếng Việt" and I think the contents are good:

So it would be easy to search for everyone.

The author (one of my friends) is an English speaker, learning Vietnamese.

Hi Korn,

I am sorry for the late reply.
I name the criteria:
-No.1: Easy to read (=mostly basic vocabulary that is still in use today) - which I think you mean common words, right?
-No. 2: Belongs to the "classics" of Vietnamese literature
- No. 3: Is known by a lot of Vietnamese

The match is below:
Chí Phèo: 1 (so so), 2, 3
Tôn Ngộ Không: 2 (actually Vietnamese people watch movies and don't read and it is translated from Chinese), 3
Poem: 2, 3 (however, the grammar structures of them are not common, you know it's poem, just like in English or German poem)

I am trying to think about some books that contains common words and well-known in Vietnam, here are they: (but may be modern and not necessary classic)

- Nguyễn Nhật Ánh' Novel: (http://vi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nguy%E1%BB ... t_%C3%81nh)
E.g. "cho tôi xin một vé đi tuổi thơ", "kính vạn hoa", "mắc biếc" etc. Most of his novels are popular, they are about friendship, teenage, family, hometown, etc.
-Đô-rê-mon (Japanese comic, most popular comic series in Vietnam for the past 20 years) - some words maybe not so common because the series are about the world in future
-Cánh đồng bất tận, Nguyễn Ngọc Tư
-Gió đầu mùa, Thạch Lam
-Thời tiết đô thị, Nguyễn Phương Văn (not so popular, but a good one)
- Nước Mỹ Nước Mỹ, Phan Việt (it is about the view of a Vietnamese about the America's culture, people, etc)

Some American novels that were translated into Vietnamese and are taught at public schools are: Tiếng gọi nơi hoang dã - Call of the wild
Những cuộc phiêu lưu của Tom Sawyer - Tom Sawyer
Ông già và biển cả - The old man and the sea

In addition, there is a poll on Goodreads about best Vietnamese Novels in 20th and 21st century: have a look
http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/3694 ... t_hay_nh_t

Hope that will help
