My translation:

"Where do the birds (/ does the bird) sleep tonight
And where does my soul dwell tonight
Oh blue bird
When will you bring the news of victory?"

Này - hey, oh

I see - thank you, Tenebrarum. So này can be a word for calling for someone's attention? Other such words are ơi (put after the person's name), ôi and (I remember vaguely) something like hỗi. Are there more? Are they interchangeable or do they have different shades of meaning? I think ơi is used in sort of shouting situations in the street (Hey- You!)

Hỡi. :)

Này as an attention getter shows that the speaker wants a more thoughtful and serious convo than usual, with lowered voices. (Because the huyền tone is falling... At least that's how I see it.) In the south này becomes nè.

It daily life, it would come after the person's name, but in poetry it's often put in front.

Linnaeus59 wrote:I think ơi is used in sort of shouting situations in the street (Hey- You!)

In Saigon you would also hear "Ê + [name/pronoun]! ..." But that's rather brusque to strangers, and definitely not acceptable to use on people you're supposed to hold in respect (parents, teachers etc., or just people older than you). Ơi is okay for all circumstances though.

random = ngẫu nhiên
thought = suy nghĩ, ý nghĩ
Why do you learn Vietnamese Korn? for fun, business, or for you have a Vietnamese wife?
Pardon me if I was so inquisitive.

korn wrote:How do you say "Have a good flight" in Vietnamese? "Cấp cánh máy bay may mán"?

That doesn't make any sense. The best I can come up with is "đi mạnh giỏi" (go safe and sound), which is a verb phrase used for all modes of transport, not just a flight.

But typically at departure, people just say stuff like "send my good wishes to [insert far-flung relatives here]" or get all emotional and cry.

Oh, and if you're ever suggested the phrase "Thượng lộ bình an" (上路平安): nobody actually says this in real life. It's not like we live in a classical Chinese novel.

korn wrote:How would you translate "Random thoughts" into Vietnamese?

"Random" is not terribly easy to translate, so it's better if we know some context.

If you put your random thoughts into a piece of writing, like a blog entry, then the title might start with "Tản mạn". (This word originally means "scattered", so... scattered thoughts --> random thoughts). E.g:
* Tản mạn về tình yêu - "On love"
* Tản mạn Sài Gòn - "Saigon tidbits"
* Tản mạn về mảnh bằng Ph.D - "A few thoughts/words on Ph.D"

In case you would like to know. As you can see through these examples, it's usually done through worked-arounds in order to sound natural, which is why we can tell instantly when a text is translated badly, word-for-word from English.

Is it wrong to put "thứ Năm" at the end?

Is this also possible?

I don't know if "wrong" is the word. It just doesn't sound as smooth. If you want to put thứ Năm at the end, then it's better to say "hôm thứ Năm".

korn wrote:Is this also possible?

Possible, but I'd imagine there's a "bay đi" somewhere in the conversation to contrast that with.

Uhm... "Fải ghệ của mày ko mà ôm đó cu, chắc buồn tình ôm ké quá" ~ is that your girlfriend whom you're hugging? Or you're so lonely that you hug somebody else's partner?

"ra không rủ tao" - why didn't you ask me out when you came here?

"mày đâu có ở đây đâu mà rủ mày" - you weren't here, how could I invite you?

These are text messages, I assume? The language is pretty rough but friendly.
Tôi kể người nghe chuyện Phố-trong-sông,
chuyện những mùa Đông đi qua thời con gái.
Bóng đổ dài, bước chân người mê mải
Gió chở mùa về,
hoang hoải cả giấc mơ..
