Different spellings between N-VN and S-VN words

Postby korn » 2014-03-02, 17:50

Hi there,

in N-VN (North-Vietnamese) and S-VN (South-Vietnamese) you sometimes spell one word with the same meaning differently, e.g.:
Curtains
(N-VN) cái rèm
(S-VN) cái màn

Spoon
(N-VN) cái thìa
(S-VN) cái muỗng

Does anyone know more? For example, how do you call fancy wine glass ((N-VN) cái ly) in S-VN? Is there maybe a full list of words that are spelled differently in N-VN and S-VN?

Regards
Please correct all my mistakes, no matter how trivial they may seem to you, also, please help me to improve my phrases. Thank you in advance!
---
S'il vous plaît, corrigez toutes mes fautes, même si elles vous paraissent insignifiantes. Et aidez-moi, s'il vous plaît, à améliorer ma façon de m'exprimer. Merci d'avance!
---
Nếu tôi viết chỗ nào chưa đúng, dù là lỗi nhỏ hay nghiêm trọng, thì các bạn hãy sửa lại giúp tôi hoặc góp ý để tôi có thể học hỏi và rút kinh nghiệm. Cám ơn các bạn nhé!

In English there are such words that are spelled in multiple ways (ex:encyclopedia/encyclopaedia, theorize/theorise...), but in Vietnamese I'm afraid there's no.
"rèm" and "màn" are two words with different meanings. On the contrary, "thìa" and "muỗng" are synonyms. This is a website that can help you search for synonyms of a word. http://tratu.soha.vn/dict/vn_vn/
Please point out every grammar mistake I make in any of my texts. Thanks

They are synonyms but aren't used in the same region, are they?

Me speaking the Northern Vietnamese dialect myself, I say "thìa" when referring to a spoon. But when I said "thìa" to a South-Vietnamese person she didn't understand. When she said "muỗng" I didn't know what it was, until I realized "muỗng" is used in South-Vietnam while "thìa" is used in North-Vietnam for "spoon".

Thanks for the link by the way.

Could you please check whether the list of "địa phương" words in the following link are correct?

So, the list in my link is fully accurate?

Do you know how South-Vietnamese call these kind of fancy wine glass?
