I tried that. And if you look at my Vatuzyeka conlang, it came out like that.

There are three tags:

Code: Select all

[table align=][/table]
[tr][/tr]
[td][/td]

The table tag goes on either end of all the rest of the table code. After align= put the alignment you want for the text (left, center, right); the table won't display properly otherwise.

The tr tag indicates a row. Your final count of tr tags should equal the number of rows you want.

The td tag indicates a cell.

Here's a quick four-cell table with left alignment. If you quote this post, you'll see there are no line breaks outside of cells; they would mess with the display.

Everything that has to be categorised somehow:

- Conjugation
- Pronouns
- Anything showing how something should be declined
- Anything where grouping would make it look more transparent (ex: categorised by gender)

If you feel like it then look at my language's page to get an idea.

If your problem is “how to write it down,” then I recommend the Language Construction Kit, specifically the part about Writing it down.

If you still have a problem with tables… Well‚ they forum tables are tricky and limited, so I’d recommend just constructing the tables in an office application and then making an image of it, for example a screenshot.

I found this website that you just enter the information and it makes you a table. Could I use it? http://www.teamopolis.com/tools/bbcode-table-generator.aspx

Yes, but once it's finished, you also have to add align=center to the table part.

But making one on Unilang directly is equally as easy.

I was looking at some of my old notes on Dialectõ, and I had made a map of countries that (and I haven't got to the historical reason behind it) was once a bigger country that all separated and many languages formed in different parts of the land. Anyways, I am wanting to create a language family that consists of 5 languages, but I don't know a good simple(-ish) way to go about it. Should I create the sound changes between all of the languages and then when I create a word for one language just use the sound change rule to create the rest of the words; basically working on all 5 languages at once. Or should I work on one language at a time.

One at a time.

Are you going to make a source-language too, sort of like Latin for the Romance group?

And remember linguistics is not mathematics.
Realistically you can't just make up some patterns and voila -> new languages.
Otherwise you could calculate Romanian from Latin.

I am thinking about making a source-language. I am currently rewriting Dialectõ, now named Dialo because I hate linux when it comes to diacritics, so I might use Dialo as the source language.

So how do you suppose I go about it? I have never created a language family before.

Now I have a question. I made a basic map detailing the countries in my Conworld and then gave the history behind the countries. Dialo was settled first and then they started settling the other countries on the island, at one point they all spoke Dialo, but after they moved off they started speaking other languages that are similar to Dialo (except Nore, because the Norens got inhabited by the Finnish and Swedes before Dialos did). So would those be considered Dialects or a language family? Or whats the difference?

That's up to you to decide, Itrout. Since you said they are new languages similar to Dialo, I'm guessing you're implying they're different enough from Dialo that they have become new languages, not necessarily intelligible with the language they descended from (and thus constitute a language family with Dialo as the parent language and the new languages as daughter languages).

There's no real technical definition of "dialect". There's no reason why we should say Cantonese is a dialect when it's mutually unintelligible with Mandarin, yet we call "Serbian" and "Croatian" separate languages for political reasons.

In a general sense, a dialect is a variety of a language that is still mutually intelligible (understandable) with another variety, i.e. British English and Australian English. Brits and Australians can understand each other, despite differences in pronunciation, some different usage, and different words that are unique to each dialect.

So it's up to you decide whether these new languages are different enough from each other to be considered separate languages (a language family) or dialects of a new language or dialects of Dialo.
Primary Conlang: Halvian
Additional conlangs: Galsaic (sister language of Halvian), and Ogygian (unrelated to the other two).

Yeah, I honestly wouldn't worry about it Itrout. If Italians and Spaniards can have a full conversation in each their own languages/lingue/idiomas, then to have two mutually intelligible languages derived from the same parent language is completely okay ;)

Sì, ehm, beh suppongo che lo si potrebbe riguardare in quello modo. Inviterai un francese dal dialo? (una lingua che non è intelligibile con le altre)

Ehi! Ci dici che voglia creare cinque lingue. Ci sono l'italiano, il francese, lo spagnolo, il portoghese, e il rumeno! Cinque lingue romanze! Hai invitato un latino.

Yes, uh, well i suppose you can look at it that way. Well you make a French from Dialo? (a language that isn't intelligible withe the others)

Yo! You say you want five. There's [the languages we know]! Five romance languages! You've made a Latin.

Yeahs theres going to be 5 languages that will come from dialo. I want to be to be similar to each other, basically some languages lose some sounds and others gain some, and some languages end up with more slang then others. Similar to how I know Spanish, but I can somewhat figure out the meaning of an Italian sentence even though I can't really figure out a Romanian sentence due to the new letters/sounds and/or different words for certain words.

That does sound like a language family, analogous to the Romance one.

I've had fun writing about the fact that Halvians, in their pre-Linguistics society, were aware of the similarities between Halvian and Galsaic, but considered Galsaic a derivative of Halvian, a bastardaized nasalized version of it. Of course in reality, Galsaic and Halvian are sister languages, both derived from a common ancenstor, but it'll be a while before Halvian grammarians realize that ;)
Primary Conlang: Halvian
Additional conlangs: Galsaic (sister language of Halvian), and Ogygian (unrelated to the other two).

Even now that linguistics is a developed discipline, there are still plenty of people without even a basic understanding of how languages are related.

^That is definitely true. But even getting non-linguists to accept the idea that language change is inevitable is a tough one lol

Anyway, as for general conlang discussion, I really want to make a post about my Linear B conlang. Problem is, most people here probably do not have a Linear B font, but the whole phonological inventory is based on Linear B and the use of Linear B is what makes this conlang fun. Maybe I could just post images of the words? I'll think about it...
Primary Conlang: Halvian
Additional conlangs: Galsaic (sister language of Halvian), and Ogygian (unrelated to the other two).
