O

Postby IpseDixit » 2014-11-21, 14:01

This is my first attempt on conlanging. My conlang is called O [ɔ], and it's the language of the O island of the Earthsea archipelago:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8b/Map_of_Earthsea.jpg

I'll try my best to make it an artlang.

Alphabet:

a - [a]
aa - [a:]
c - [k] before a, o, u and other consonants; [c] before e, i
cc - [g]
ch - [x]
c·c - [k:] or [c:]
e - [e] or [ɛ]
ee - [e:] or [ɛ:]
w - [f]
ww - [f:]
h - [h]
hc - [χ]
hh - [ħ]
hl - [ɬ]
hr - [r̥]
hs - [ʃ]
ht - [ð]
hz - [ʂ]
i - [i], [j] before another vowel
ï - [i] before another vowel
ii - [i:]
l - [l]
ll - [l:]
m - [m], [ɱ] before w and v
mm - [m:]
n - [n], [ŋ] before c and cc
nn - [n:]
o - [o] or [ɔ]
oo - [o:] or [ɔ:]
r - [r], it can become [ɾ] when it's intervocalic.
rh - [ʀ]
rr - [ʁ]
r·r - [r:]
s - [s]
ss - [ç]
s·s - [s:]
t - [t]
tt - [θ]
t·t - [t:]
u - [u], [w] before another vowel
ü - [u] before another vowel
uu - [u:]
v - [v]
vv - [v:]

Some Orthography Rules

Uppercase letters - O doesn't have uppercase letters. The only word (always) written in uppercase is the name of the language itself (O).

Interpunct - the interpunct is not just used with some geminants, it's also used to clear up certain pronunciation ambiguities, for instance there are different ways to pronounce hrhl, the interpunct shows how to pronounce it correctly, so we have:

hr·hl - [r̥ɬ]
h·rh·l - [hʀl]
hr·h·l - [r̥hl]
h·r·hl - [hrɬ]
h·r·h·l - [hrhl]

(this is just a theoretical example, I doubt I'll ever create a word with h·r·h·l or hr·h·l...)

I just don't get anti-intuitive spellings like this, which serve no purpose except to lend the language a false air of exoticism.

My initial intention was to create a language which had only letters of the same height. So initially I wanted to use only these letters:

aceımnorsuvzwx

But then I realized that writing ı instead of i every time would have been quite inconvinient, so I went for i.

Moreover, aethetically speaking I kinda abhor x, so I had to introduce h because otherwise there would have not been other ways to represent sounds like [x], [h], etc etc.

Then I kinda missed l, so I added it too.

Plus, I also wanted t and th so I decided to use ƿ (even though I know that technically it has nothing to do with t and th) because I find it very elegant and because at least it doesn't go upwards like h, l and i but downwards.

Oh, and I also have two vowels with dieresis...

I wouldn't like to add other exceptions to the rule. I think cc is fine, I don't find it so anti-intuitive after all.

Punctuation

Some punctuation marks are different from English and many other languages.

- period
- semicolon
: - question mark
; - exclamation mark
:: - colon

Stress

The stress is never marked, but it usually falls on the second last syllable. In dyssillabic words it usually falls on the last syllable (there are many exceptions though).

The punctuation is very strange :hmm: Does O have its own native writing system that makes use of them? That could also give reason for /g/ being represented as <cc> and any other peculiarities. Then again, since you say you want it an artlang, you're doing a great job going for aesthetically pleasing spelling conventions ^^ I too had an idea a while ago to use double consonants in the orthography for voiced counterparts, then I decided I'd use <pp/bb> for the labiodental plosives instead and <tt> as the intervocalic unstressed [ɾ].

Nope, I haven't invented any conscript. I'm still not sure about the period and the semicolon, I find them nice on their own, but I don't know if they're going to be equally nice as punctuation marks. Well, the only way to know is to wait for the moment when I'll be able to write entire sentences. :)

That could also give reason for /g/ being represented as <cc> and any other peculiarities.

I have explained the reason for that a few posts above. :)

Then again, since you say you want it an artlang, you're doing a great job going for aesthetically pleasing spelling conventions ^^

Thanks :)

You could think of it as a [k] (c) that got voiced with time.

But don't take my words serious, I'm just thinking out loud.

Btw, O is supposed to be a a priori conlang, well, at least the lexycon (although there might be some unconscious contaminations from the languages I've studied); as for the grammar, maybe that's gonna have some degree of a posteriori-ness (from various languages)...

Che bella! La tua lingua artificiale è molto bella. Lo scritto non mi piace tanto, dire la verità. Come tu hai contratto il virus dei conlang? T'interessano adesso semplicemente?

Do you plan to have any words beginning with long consonants?

I didn't notice that. I'd bet such a subtle difference in so similar words would disappear in a 200 years' time and you'd end up with only a word for 'we'.

That's the font's fault. If you put the IPA tags before and after the symbol it displays correctly.

IPSE!!! You're being a me :partyhat: ! My Isyan is the language spoken on the continent of Isya from the game Fiesta! Your O is spoken on O of the Earthsea archipelago from a series! I'm not the only one who's making a language based in a world not their own (though, I've changed Isya a lot and its culture from the Fiesta Isya, so it is now mine Mwahahaha!!).

didn't think about that, I'm gonna change them.. even though I could always say that since it is a magical archipelago, magic will make this language immutable :P

Cool, now I know what that is for.
